This Christmas there won't be any warm and fuzzy elf socks to put on at the movies, as the Christmas Day releases will be more true to real life: family brawls, excess partying, escaped convicts, and boxing matches. So many good flick picks that you may have to give your family a rain check on the whole Christmas thing. Let's take a look at the Big 4: The Wolf of Wall Street, August: Osage County, Labor Day, and Grudge Match.
1. The Wolf of Wall Street
Another rise and fall story from Martin Scorsese in his next one The Wolf of Wall Street. The true story of Jordan Belfort's rise in the 1990s to a wealthy stockbroker living it up, followed by crime and corruption, of course. This won't be a stretch for Leonardo DiCaprio - he already ran the '90s. Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, and Jean Dujardin costar.
2. August: Osage County
Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. August: Osage County is based on the Pulitzer-winning play by Tracy Letts about the broken women of the Weston family, who all return to their childhood Oklahoma home and drug addicted mother (Meryl Streep) after the disappearance of their father. Ensemble cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, and more. Don't you just love dysfunctional ensemble casts?
3. Labor Day
Writer/Director Jason Reitman's (Juno, Up in the Air) Labor Day is the story of one summer holiday weekend in '87 where a divorced fragile woman, played by Kate Winslet, and her young son, agree to take in an injured escaped convict (Josh Brolin). All of Reitman's films have been solid so far, and with Winslet taking the reign's, Labor Day should be something to see.
4. Grudge Match
Yo, dad! Have you heard that Stallone and De Niro are getting in the ring again? With each other?! Director Peter Segal's (Tommy Boy, The Longest Yard) Grudge Match gets two retired boxing rivals, "Razor" and "The Kid," to go glove-to-glove one...last...time. I don't think anyone is trying to outdo Rocky or Raging Bull here, being that this is a sports comedy, and being that nobody is that half-witted. Grudge Match is going to pack some seats on Christmas Day. My money is always on De Niro. You got this, Kid!
