Star Trek Takes You 'Into Darkness'

The USS Enterprise NC-1701, built in 2245, is sent to planet Nibiru in order to examine a primitive civilization. The crew is called back home when they discover that a destructive force within has turned, threatening the Starfleet and everyone's future. In the sequel, and next installment of J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek (2009) reboot, Star Trek Into Darkness serves as a character driven exploration of relationships among the crew, while keeping it an adventurous sci-fi ride. I myself am not a Trekkie, but a Phile, versed in discovering similarities to The X-Files  among the science fiction genre. This is why when Captain James T. Kirk ( Chris Pine ) gets stripped of his position as captain after exposing the Enterprise to Nibiru's civilization is not unlike Special Agent Dana Scully getting taken off The X-Files and transferred, both having their job performances evaluated. Kirk's mission to rescue First Officer Spock ( Zachary Quinto ) endangers his position, but t

The So-So 'Gatsby'

I was fully thrilled awaiting the release (following a postponed Christmas day release teaser) of  Baz Luhrmann 's first film in five years -  The Great Gatsby . Why? Luhrmann ( Romeo + Juliet , Moulin Rouge! ) + DiCaprio. I love both and had great expectations, though possibly too great. The Great Gatsby follows the story of Midwestern writer Nick Carraway ( Tobey Maguire ), who comes to an illuminating New York in the summer of 1922. Carraway is drawn into the excess world of his rich and mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby, played by the incomparable Leonardo DiCaprio . Gatsby, who gets a James Bond entrance, throws weekly extravagant parties for random people to show up to, and show up they do, while he manages to remain shrouded in mystery. Rarely does Gatsby expose his identity, yet everyone seems to have a story about who this Gatsby is, and where he comes from. We learn later that Gatsby puts on all these parties in hopes that his across the bay neighbor, Daisy Buchanan (Car

The Crow Reboot To Star Luke Evans

Next year, it will be 20 years after the neo-noir  The Crow  made its way to theaters, following the unexpected on set death of its star Brandon Lee. Son of Martial arts legend Bruce Lee, Brandon, playing the title character Eric Draven, was killed in a freak accident while filming a shooting scene for The Crow.  With the premature death of Lee, production of the film was forced to shut down. The Crow was later completed using CGI special effects and body doubles of Brandon Lee. Based on the gothic graphic novel by James O'Barr, The Crow tells the story of a rock musician who is resurrected by a crow to avenge his death and the death of his fiancĂ©, one year after the brutal murder of the couple. Spanish director F. Javier Gutierrez will retell the gothic story in his remake starring Luke Evans  ( The Raven, Immortals ), who beat out actors including Alexander Skarsgard ( True Blood ) and James McAvoy ( X-Men ), as the new Eric Draven. It is still unknown when production for Th

Bates and Sidibe Join 'American Horror Story: Coven'

Is the above image a legitimate promo for American Horror Story: Coven on FX  October 2013? I have no evidence to support that. But, it is entirely intriguing. The third season of the AHS horror anthology is said to revolve around a witch coven(s) and will star Season 1 veterans Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, and Frances Conroy. Executive producer and co-creator Ryan Murphy has the real meat of the show on lock down - J.J. Abrams style. Perhaps the cauldron is not yet boiled for audiences to consume? A walk-on cameo by the Sanderson Sisters? The latest is that Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe  ( Precious , The Big C ) has joined the cast that is up to no good. Everything being released so far is bewitching - of course, the season of the witch - mother Bates (not Norma) - and now Gabourey. Though Season 1 of American Horror Story was excellent and refreshing, Season 2 was over-the-top and indulgent, and sent me packing to the next horror show. But as the series goes -
