Critics' Choice Awards is the show that jump starts the awards season every year, and the outcome generally satisfies the critics, as well as movie buffs. Now this awards show is a good time for the audience - and why? Because the actors, directors, producers and such are having a good time. For one - there's alcohol. How else are you gonna loosen up Tommy Lee Jones, the great stone face? The emotional blow of losing to your fellow nominee is diminished after 5 glasses of champagne. On the contrary, the loser is cheerful, and gently mutters out: "I love you, man!" The tables are arranged by the members of each nominated movie that night.
The pressure of walking up on stage alone after winning an award is lightened, as you have your cast at your side while you stumble up, say something charming, and peace out because there is no annoying shut-up-and-leave-the-stage song like at the Academy Awards. The first award of the night was Best Acting Ensemble, which went to the much deserved cast of Silver Linings Playbook, and included Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jackie Weaver, and Robert De Niro. Bradley Cooper was also awarded Best Comedy Actor, as well as Jennifer Lawrence Best Comedy Actress for Linings. The love for my favorite film of the year continued when Silver Linings Playbook scored Best Comedy Movie (but it's also a drama).
Jessica Chastain was very humbled by her win as Best Actress for her role in Zero Dark Thirty, asserting how important strong female roles are, while also indebting her performance to director Kathryn Bigelow. Daniel Day-Lewis took the Best Actor award for being a virtually unrecognizable Day-Lewis, as Lincoln.
For the big award of the night, many undoubtedly expected Spielberg's Lincoln to take it home, but as I suspected Best Picture went to Argo. A shocked Ben Affleck had won earlier for Best Director saying, "I would like to thank the Academy." Affleck was surprisingly left out of the best director category with the Academy Award nominations earlier that morning. The Broadcast Film Critics Association ceremony honors the best in film, from the people that matter - the critics. You're good, Ben.
